ABOUT THE FILMS
At the beginning of silent film era, films used to be shown in selections of two or three films that would often include news reels and other short films. In 1914, a newcomer to the film industry named Charlie Chaplin appeared for the first time in a character that would become known simply as The Tramp, and it was an instant hit with audiences.
Over the next five years, Chaplin would go on to produce over 50 short films, cementing his status as the world’s first international movie star. To this day, the iconic character remains instantly recognisable to all, but few have seen the original works that made Chaplin a household name.
This special screening will include a selection of Chaplin’s very first short films including a newly colorised version of the classic films using contemporary artificial intelligence technology that transform the classic black and white into rich technicolor. The screening will include short commentary about the history of cinema and Chaplin’s place in it.
